The movie, Beowulf lacks realistic or humanistic feelings in its delivery. To Zemeckis’ credit, this is the point of CGI, to create a non-human world by using the advanced technology we have today. In the scene I have posted here, there are several elements that need enhancing and editing that could make it seem more realistic even in the format of CGI. For starters, the scene opens with a close up of the crown- an engraved gold piece that lacks genuine detail. From here begins a fighting scene, where all of the characters move in a way that doesn’t seem human at all- they move more like very fast and awkward robots. At 00:45 seconds, a soldier is stricken by a dagger thrown towards the audience in a 3-D way. I cannot get over how ridiculous the blood looks as it spews out of his body when he falls to the water below him. Also, this much blood wouldn’t be drawn from a dagger striking one place on the body- nor would the blood come out until the dagger was removed. I understand that with computer generated imagery anything is possible, but I think they should make it somewhat believable to the audience. One would think that with technology as advanced as CGI they could create some more realistic blood. The setting could use some work as well, perhaps formatting real scenery into CGI. I think that the film would have benefitted by combining the CGI with actual human components, if this is at all a possibility.
This blog needs more specific mise en scene critique. Otherwise you are just repeating things about actions.
