Azreen I. Demonstration Blog: Young Victoria

The movie I selected for mise en scene was Young Victoria. This scene is when Prince Albert comes to visit  Queen Victoria.

Dominant: The first thing my eye was attracted to was both the characters themselves. It is a very intimate scene shot which makes one focus solely on them as important figures. I also noticed the way Prince Albert is looking at Queen Victoria. He is trying to show his feelings towards her and this is evident in the way he looks down upon her.

Lighting key: The lighting in this scene is natural lighting. Also there seems to be a low key lighting on Albert's face in order for our eyes to be directed towards Victoria.

Camera Proxemics: The camera proxemics for this scene is intimate. We are only able to see the face of the two characters involved in the scene. The background is blurred out so as to focus the attention towards the two characters.

Character Proxemics: The character proxemics for this scene is also intimate. Both of the characters are close together and the scene is entirely focused on them.

This frame illuminates the larger scene by allowing us to focus on the two characters. Even by the angle of the camera, we can tell that the shot makes one look up at the two characters. This shows their importance in the film. The scene shows us the affection between the two characters. The whole movie is based on Victoria finding herself through becoming the Queen of England and the love that she shared with Albert. The latter was the more important feature in the movie. Thus the scene perfectly captures the essence of the movie.

Here is the trailer for the movie Young Victoria:
