Hales, Becnel- "Time Enough at Last (An E-book Version)"

This short is a modern take on my favorite episode of the Twilight Zone, "Time Enough at Last." In the original, the main character (Burgess Meredith) wants to read constantly but is inhibited by everyone else in his daily life. He takes his lunch (reading) break in the safe at the bank he works at when he sees in the daily newspaper that there is a possibility of an H-bomb. He gets back to his reading and then hears the bomb. When he emerges from the safe, he finds that he is the last living man on earth. He is ecstatic about this discovery because now he can read all day and no one can bother him. Only, as he walks down the steps of the library with his arms full of books, his glasses fall and break. He is left with no human interaction and no way to read.
We did our version with a Kindle. Tragedy ensues when the electricity goes out around the world... leaving no way to charge the "book."

  1. Jami and I had a lot of fun making this short. We made a story board which helped a lot in trying to film it within the allotted time. The hardest part was inserting the text on the Kindle. Alex helped us with this by using Adobe After Effect. The other difficult part was editing the music track to fit the film perfectly. Also, getting across the plot points in only one minute was quite hard. I learned a lot about iMovie in the editing process.
Jami helped so much with scouting locations that were fitting. And so much thanks to Alex for helping with Adobe After Effect. Thanks to Andrew and Dr. McCay for being in the film!

  3. For our one minute film, I filmed the video and picked out locations for our shots. Amber created our story board and edited our film. I have never edited a film before, so this process was new to me, and Amber was really helpful. She guided me throughout the entire process.I believe that we captured the message that we were trying to convey in film (the main character is finally left alone to enjoy her reading, but is unable to because her battery dies). I liked the locations that we picked for the scenes, and that our film really flowed and followed our story board well. It was hard to cut down our film to just one minute, but I am very pleased with the end result.
